Komatsu launches PC9000-12 globally as its largest-ever hydraulic excavator, with diesel and electric drive options

Komatsu Germany Mining Division (KGM) announced the global launch of the PC9000-12 hydraulic mining excavator on 2 April 2026, making the machine available worldwide through Komatsu's dealer network - including North America - after its first unit entered service at Suncor's Fort Hills oil sands mine in Alberta, Canada, in May 2025. The PC9000-12 is Komatsu's largest-ever hydraulic excavator, with an operating weight of 974-988 U.S. tons depending on configuration, surpassing the previous PC8000 by approximately 145 U.S. tons.

Bucket capacity and production output

The machine is available in front shovel and backhoe configurations, with published bucket sizes of 46 m³ for the front shovel and 49 m³ for the backhoe. Both figures are manufacturer-stated and represent the largest bucket volumes in the Komatsu PC series.

Komatsu says the PC9000-12 delivers a payload exceeding 80 tons per pass. Under that loading rate, it can fill a Komatsu 980E rigid-frame dump truck - rated at 400 short tons - in five passes in under 150 seconds. Under optimal conditions, the manufacturer claims a production rate of approximately 8,000 tons per hour; actual output will vary with material density, truck availability, and operator proficiency.

The machine is optimised to match Komatsu haul trucks in the 240-400 short-ton class and supports double-side loading thanks to its short tail swing and long reach.

Powertrain options

Three drivetrain configurations are offered:

  • Diesel Tier 4 - a high-efficiency Cummins engine meeting Tier 4 Final emissions standards
  • Diesel unregulated - for jurisdictions without Tier 4 requirements
  • Electric drive - grid-connected, with two Innomotics motors each rated at 1,700 kW (total output approximately 3,400 kW); no battery is fitted and no manufacturer-stated runtime applies

The electric configuration eliminates on-site diesel consumption and reduces noise and vibration, though it requires a dedicated high-voltage trailing cable and, in many cases, a dedicated substation. Komatsu has not published a comparative fuel-consumption figure between the diesel and electric variants.

Autonomy and serviceability

The PC9000-12 is designed for integration with Komatsu's FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System, allowing the excavator to work alongside autonomous haul trucks without additional operators on the truck fleet. The machine also carries a slew ring rated for a 60,000-hour lifespan and hydraulic filters with a 2,000-hour service interval - both manufacturer-stated figures.

Komtrax Plus health monitoring provides real-time machine status data and triggers automatic engine shutdown on critical faults, a feature Komatsu positions as reducing unplanned downtime at remote mine sites.

The PC9000-12 is manufactured at Komatsu Germany GmbH's Mining Division facility and is available to order globally. Mining operators evaluating the machine will want to watch how Komatsu prices the electric-drive option relative to diesel, and whether the first North American deliveries outside Canada follow the Alberta deployment timeline.
