JCB adds Dual Drive to its 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders, letting operators reposition from the excavator seat

JCB has introduced a Dual Drive system for its 3CX and 4CX backhoe loaders, adding drive and steering controls to the excavator end of the machine so operators can reposition without rotating the seat or switching to the loader controls. The system is available on the company's 109 hp 3CX and 4CX models and was publicly showcased at PWX 2026 in late August 2026.

What the problem was

During excavation work, backhoe operators traditionally need to stop periodically to reposition the machine - a process that requires rotating the seat, switching from the excavator controls to the loader controls, moving the machine, and then returning to the excavator position. On a long trench or ditch-cleaning run, that sequence repeats dozens of times across a shift, adding non-productive time between every digging cycle.

Dual Drive adds drive and steering controls to the excavator end of the machine, allowing the operator to move forward along a trench or work area without changing operating positions. The result is a shorter gap between the end of one digging cycle and the start of the next.

Applications and target buyers

The system is designed for applications including trenching, ditch cleaning, utility installation, and municipal maintenance. Those are also the segments where backhoe loaders remain the dominant machine type - utility crews and public works departments that need a single machine capable of digging, loading, and travelling between sites.

"It reduces downtime between digging cycles and helps crews accomplish more throughout the day," said James Gill, product manager at JCB North America.

Rental fleets serving utility and municipal contractors are a natural buyer. The Dual Drive feature adds measurable productivity value without changing the machine's footprint or transport requirements, which matters when fleet managers are evaluating whether an upgrade justifies the price difference over a standard unit.

Dual Drive is offered on the updated 3CX and 4CX lineup, which JCB has also refreshed with a new gearbox, an outerbox extending dipper stick, and a Command-Plus cab. The 3CX and 4CX range spans an operating weight of 16,820 to 20,940 lb and a maximum dig depth of 21 ft 4 in, with gross power running from 74 to 109 hp (55 to 81 kW).

Whether the feature migrates to smaller or larger models in the lineup - or prompts competing backhoe manufacturers to add rear-end drive controls of their own - will be worth tracking as the system moves from trade-show display into dealer inventory. Availability timing for standard stock orders has not been disclosed.
