Bobcat's R2-Series mini excavators bring load-sensing hydraulics to the 1-2 tonne class

Bobcat has launched its next-generation R2-Series 1-2 tonne mini excavators - the E16, E17z, E19 and E20z - replacing the previous M-Series lineup with a SmartFlow load-sensing hydraulic system that the company says reduces fuel consumption by up to 18% and lowers operating noise by 4 dBA compared with the outgoing machines. The range made its public debut at the Executive Hire Show in Coventry, UK, on 11-12 February 2026, and its first outdoor demonstration appearance at Hillhead 2026 in Buxton, Derbyshire, on 23-25 June.

SmartFlow hydraulics: what changed

The defining engineering change across all four models is the SmartFlow closed-centre, flow-sharing hydraulic system paired with an upgraded engine. Bobcat says the system delivers fuel consumption reductions of up to 18% and a noise reduction of 4 dBA versus the previous generation, with both figures manufacturer-claimed rather than independently measured.

The system operates on a load-sensing principle: it supplies only the flow the implement actually demands, rather than maintaining a fixed output. Bobcat says this configuration - previously reserved for larger excavators - allows operators to run multiple hydraulic functions simultaneously without the power drop typically seen in machines of this size class. The practical effect is that a flail mower on a quick coupler can run at full speed while the operator drives, slews and lifts at the same time.

The four models

The R2-Series spans four machines targeting different site constraints:

• E16 - the most compact model in the range, suited to the tightest access conditions
• E17z - zero tail swing variant replacing the M-Series E17z
• E19 - mid-range model for general utility and infrastructure work
• E20z - the flagship, combining true Zero House Swing, a fully enclosed cab, and a retractable undercarriage that narrows to less than 1 m - a combination Bobcat says is unique in the sub-2-tonne class

The E20z's retractable undercarriage allows it to pass through standard gate openings and then expand for a wider footprint when stability is needed. The full-size enclosed cab sets it apart from most competitors in the weight class, where open-canopy or ROPS-only configurations remain common.

Target sectors

Bobcat positions the R2-Series at rental fleets and contractors working in road maintenance, utility installation, fibre-optic network laying and urban development - applications where machine width, noise output and fuel cost are all active constraints. The range was first shown to the rental trade at the Executive Hire Show before its outdoor demonstration run at Hillhead, a sequencing that reflects how rental fleets, rather than end contractors, are typically the primary buyers in this size class.

The R2-Series replaces the M-Series E17, E17z, E19 and E20z models respectively, with the E16 added as a new entry-level option. Bobcat has updated model nomenclature across the range so that buyers can identify which generation of machine they are specifying.

The R2-Series is currently available in European Stage V markets. Bobcat has not published a North American availability date or pricing for the range; those details will be worth tracking as the company continues its broader compact equipment rollout following the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2026 announcements in March.
